Bindi Irwin, at the young age of seventeen, already has quite a bit to smile about. Daughter of the media personality Steve Irwin, she has gone above and beyond what most teens would do. From being an author to her own book series in 2011, starring in her own television show Bindi the Jungle Girl, and becoming an international advocate for wildlife conservation and education, there is nothing that the young girl can’t do. This year, she put on her dancing shoes and now can add “Season 22 Winner” to her already impressive resume.
Irwin, whose partner was Derek Hough a six-time DWTS winner, was completely surprised by the win. “This is completely different to anything I’ve done in my life, I’m used to wrangling crocodiles!”, she exclaims.
In her final dance on the famous stage, Irwin paid special tribute to her father, who passed away in 2006. Her and Hough danced to “Footprints in the Sand” by R&B singer Leona Lewis, leaving the audience in tears in remembrance of the great crocodile lover. Although she has made tributes to her father before on the show, this performance tug at the heartstrings of each viewer and instantly went viral.
Losing your father is difficult at any age, but especially as a young adult, where parents are vital to coping with the many emotions associated with growing up. Yet, no matter what she did, Irwin knew that her father was looking down at her with a sense of endearment.
“Sometimes during rehearsals it feels like there are three people in the room,” Bindi said on the show. “Derek put that in this freestyle, and I feel that Dad is with me every day.”
Irwin doesn’t just wrestle with crocodiles for fun, she tackles stars such as Carlos Pena Vega, Alek Skarlatos and Nick Carter for the enviable disco ball trophy. No big, right!?
After her win was announced, Bindi Irwin said that she was thankful for her boyfriend, wakeboarder Chandler Powell. The two have been dating for three months, and we’re already gushing over the power couple. Rumors have reported that the two have been thinking about marriage, but they have yet to confirm anything.
Irwin goes on to say, “Honestly, I only ever wish for more time and happiness with my beautiful family. Thankful for food on the table and such gorgeous, genuine people in my life. Spending Thanksgiving in America was a blessing, but I really believe we should count our blessings each and every day, at every meal and moment with those that we love.”
At seventeen, the future is bright for Irwin. Whether it’s making friends with nature or dancing gracefully onstage in front of millions, nothing is stopping her from making her mark on the world. Like father like daughter, it’s certain that she is going to make a global impact just like Steve Irwin did for his children. As for Derek Hough, he’s just relieved that he has another trophy to keep the others company.
