Taylor Swift Donates $250,000 To Kesha!

Taylor Swift is known for her charitable gifts and donations for her fans, but this time, she outdid herself.

Swift donated $250,000 to “Tik Tok” singer Kesha, who faces legal battles of being freed from her contract with Sony Music after alleged reports of her producer, Dr. Luke, sexually and mentally abusing her. After reporting the incident and going through an investigation, the government has sided with Sony Music and is not allowing Kesha to leave her contract. The case struck a common chord with the millions frustrated at the double standards within the entertainment industry, and shortly after the court ruling was delivered, #FreeKesha was trending on Twitter.

“In a show of support, Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to Kesha to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time,” said Tree Paine, spokesperson for Taylor Swift.

Prior to the donation, Demi Lovato took to Twitter to demonstrate her support for Kesha during this difficult time. While inspiring, some interpreted the tweets as a jab to Swift, especially after her controversial speech at the 2016 Grammys.

Shortly after Swift made her donation public, Lovato continued to the Twitterverse to express her discontentment with Swift’s action:

Now, we’re not one to judge, but if Demi Lovato wants to fight for women’s rights and fair treatment, encouraging catfights on the Internet is not the right or mature way to do it. Us females have the potential to push a human being out of our body, and are more than pointless Twitter fights that begin a dangerous cycle of trying to outdo each other. $250,000 might be spare change for Swift, but it was a significant donation to help a fellow singer-songwriter in desperation.

The incident shook up some of the best known celebrities, not just Swift. Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Troye Sivan, Demi Lovato, Sky Ferreria, and Miley Cyrus are only a handful of celebrities angry at Kesha’s unjust court decision.

On Twitter, “YOUTH” singer Troye Sivan publicly called out Sony Music, saying the following:

One dedicated activist even went to begin an online petition, in which over 900 people have signed thus far. The petition asks for user to boycott all Sony products and music until Kesha is freed from her contract, and can begin making music with a different label.

Regardless of how much is donated or who makes more of an impact, the idea that one unjust action has been able to rally and mobilize so many people towards activism and action is a step in the right direction. It is up to us to say enough to the producers who get away with mistreating their client, or the government treating corporations more like people than the victims themselves. Change begins and ends with us, as we stand united fighting for our mutual freedoms in a world that tries so desperately to tear us apart. Let’s not take the frustrations we feel currently regarding the lack of action as motivation to remain silent or complacent, but rather fight back for a singer who has already given so much to the entertainment industry.
